Cystic Fibrosis
The Catalan Baguetina promotes a study for improving the treatment of cystic fibrosis (CF). CF is an inherited genetic disease and not contagious. To express in a baby requires the gene for CF is transmitted by the father and the mother, which in turn will have to be carriers. An estimated 4% of the general population carries this gene. These are people who do not receive the father and mother at once, are not affected by the disease, but can be carriers to pass it on to their descendants. One in 2500 to 3,000 newborns receive the abnormal gene from both mother and father and, therefore, suffers from the disease. CF affects boys and girls alike, makes no distinction of sex. It is a chronic disease that develops in different ways depending on the person and we can say that is the most common inherited genetic disease. CF affects the properties of mucus. The more viscous and this complicates the removal, which carries the genetic defects of the disease. Bronchi become clogged and infected, and cause coughing and expectoration. The digestive system is also affected: the pancreatic enzymes are blocked and can not perform their digestive function, and consequences are abdominal pain and diarrhea. Since the location of the gene for cystic fibrosis in 1985 until today have been very different lines of research that show the specific treatment of this disease with some optimism. Work is in finding new drugs, improve treatment for combat bronchial-pulmonary infections, to develop a vaccine against some bacteria, to develop technologies that will provide oxygen to the lungs. La Baguetina Catalana confident in the science and medical progress, and it is intended as resources to finance research in cystic fibrosis is that in the not too distant future, a more controlled disease and that affected patients can gain quality of life.
